In order to see, your eye must focus light on the retina, convert the light into electrical impulses, and send those impulses to your brain to be interpreted. The amount of light entering the eye is controlled by the muscles of the iris. These muscles contract or dilate the pupils. The pupil becomes larger in dim light to allow more light to go in. In bright light, it constricts or becomes smaller to restrict the amount of light going in.
