First, since you are adding, you would need to create a common denominator. 
[tex] \frac{1}{6} [/tex] = [tex] \frac{2}{12} [/tex]
[tex] \frac{1}{4} [/tex] = [tex] \frac{3}{12} [/tex]

Now, all you have to do is add. 
[tex] \frac{2}{12} [/tex] + [tex] \frac{3}{12} [/tex] = [tex] \frac{5}{12} [/tex]

The sum would be [tex] \frac{5}{12} [/tex].
