When did newspapers become financially independent?

They started to become independent in the early 20th century, with the advent of commercial advertising. The ability for businesses to place spots in a newspaper in exchange for a payment to the publisher gave the papers the ability to earn revenue outside of the usual price of the copy of the paper.
