A number is 9 more than another number. Twice the sum of the two numbers is 46. Find the two numbers.

2(x + y) = 46 ( divide both sides by 2 )

x + y = 23 → (2)

substitute y = x + 9 into (2)

x + x + 9 = 23

2x = 14 ( divide both sides by 2 )

x = 7

and y = x + 9 = 7 + 9 = 16

The 2 numbers are 7 and 16
