In the 1700s a scientist named Joseph Priestley discovered that when he placed a jar over a candle, the flame soon went out. However, if he placed a live plant under the jar with the candle, the flame did not go out.

Answer:

1st Case

The Flame did go out because Fire needs oxygen to keep on burning thus when the oxygen was cut out the flame stopped burning

2nd case

The flame did not go out because there was oxygen the plant was giving out oxygen thus the flame continued to burn
