Explanation:

Necessary cause, by definition is a condition that must exist for a disorder to occur. If Disorder Y occurs, then Cause X must have preceded it. This can be explained further with an example as  general paresis (Y) cannot develop unless a person has previously contracted syphilis (X). Many mental disorders do not appear to have necessary causes.
