Since displacement is a vector quantity the displacement could be larger or smaller depending upon the direction of consideration or the reference axis. If the destination is in a positive direction with respect to the reference axis or its initial position then its displacement will be positive vice-versa its displacement will be negative.
Displacement is the shortest distance between the initial and final spots of the concerned object.
