A cognitive fixation is a condition where upon a stressful situation, we tend to overlook the simplest answers when it's right in front of us. Let's say you're in a sinkin ship, sometimes people tend to overlook that we can use chairs as floating devices or as paddles. Cognitive fixation represents a strong setback at the time where quick thinking is required.

Hope this helps!
