jackson wanted lewis and clark to find an all-water route to the pacific ocean, strengthen u.s. claims to the pacific northwest by reaching it through an overland route, explore and map the territory, make note of its natural resources and wildlife, and make contact with indian tribes with the intention of establishing trade with them.
