I am Shawnnell, Your Barrier Breaking, Master Level, No Bullshitting Licensed Professional Counselor. I founded Choosing Empowerment with a mission to eliminate and/or reduce barriers that reduce the likelihood of marginalized and Disenfranchised communities seeking help. Our focus is to provide Mental Health & Wellness services to BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, Foster/Adoptive Families, and formerly incarcerated individuals, among other marginalized & disenfranchised communities. We do this by offering Psychotherapy virtually to people of all ages in my native state of Louisiana, my resident state of Texas, as well as internationally. I also offer Mental Health and Wellness Life Coaching beyond the boundaries of my Licensed states. Choosing Empowerment LLC's foundation rests on the POWER of CHOICE and the POWER of HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS.

Everyone can heal if they are willing, ready, and given the right tools and support. Every day we make choices. Some of those choices are not our best choices but we make them based on our experiences, knowledge (or lack thereof), thoughts, and emotions. The mind is amazing and our thoughts have power. My goal is to help people remove the barriers that impact their ability to utilize empowering thoughts. While choosing what happens to us and/or around us seems impossible, we are more likely to use the power we have to choose how we think, respond, react, and feel about it. Then we can make effective choices that will be beneficial to our well-being such as building healthy relationships.

I approach counseling primarily from a cognitive-behavioral perspective in that patterns of thoughts and actions are explored in order to better understand the client’s problems and to develop solutions. I also use a solution-focused model in which the focus is goal-directed and focuses on solutions rather than the problems of the client. I work with clients in a variety of formats, including individually, as couples, and as families. I often pull from other theories and modalities as needed to ensure that your treatment is as individualized as you are. I am a facilitator for Nurturing Parenting. I offer Domestic Violence counseling as well as Anger Management. I see clients of all ages, backgrounds, and orientations. I am primarily a Virtual Therapist and meetings are not usually conducted in my office. I come to you via Video chat, Phone, or Secure Messenger.

I take seriously my role as a Mental Health Advocate, Speaker, Author, and Leader in the Community, and I am equally as dedicated in my quest to remain honest, informative, straightforward, compassionate, non-judgmental, and understanding. I believe in accountability and empowering my clients and everyone around me to do the work needed to heal and become their best and highest versions of themselves. Cycle breaking is hard and we are here to help you on your wellness journey by offering supportive accountability and reminding you of your greatness along the way. You are invited to start or continue your healing journey here in this safe space of The Cyclebreaking Village. You can do this and I am here to help.
