How's it going? My name is Jacari Jackson (MSW 89841) and I apply myself as a mental health therapist. I chose to get my master’s in social work from the University of Southern California due to their emphasis in teaching whole person care and trauma-focused interventions to their cohort so they are more equipped to provide services to an ever-adjusting landscape of vulnerable populations. What lead me to pursuing a career in therapeutic services came from my upbringing. I tended to be the mediator and “safe-space” for my friends and immediate family while growing up. Even deeper than that truth, I have personally benefitted from the positive effects of having someone to listen to your needs and provide guidance when appropriate through my own mental health services and expanded village. Many children/teenagers slip through the cracks during their school years and do not develop a “safe-space” to voice their true emotions and concerns without judgement or penalty, and that is an issue. I have worked with adults who still lack that “safe-space” from their childhood years and have witnessed the negative impact that can have on someone’s psyche, behaviors, and feeling of purpose in the world. It is important to me to be a safe individual for my members to express themselves emotionally and verbally in a session. Since graduating with my master’s in 2019, I have amassed experience with working collaboratively with those who have Major Depressive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Schizoaffective diagnoses on the for-profit and community health levels of service respectively. I have worked with individuals by utilizing cognitive behavioral interventions to help guide them through the self-reflection process and assist them in understanding their own maladaptive patterns of thought with greater accuracy. My approach to therapy pulls from the Humanistic and Cognitive schools of thought mainly, in which focusing on the development of one’s strengths may assist them in their pursuit to maximize their own potential. In my own work over the last five years, this approach to therapy has empowered my clients to resolve their personal issues and assist them to become what they feel is the best version of themselves. My goal is to help individuals foster the tools to address their needs and to develop new perspectives on how to utilize what they already have within them.
